Iraq moves toward draft law to place weapons under state control
Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi instructed the parliamentary security and defense committee to prepare legislation restricting weapons to state control.
Rudaw, citing the prime minister’s office, reported that the proposed law is intended to reinforce the state’s authority over arms and security institutions. The committee chairman said parliament would support measures to strengthen the armed forces, border protection and air defenses. The report is consequential because it puts the politically sensitive issue of armed groups and uncontrolled weapons back on the legislative agenda.
